Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur? The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success? Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.

Eric has helped entrepreneurs and creative people succeed as a mentor, repeat entrepreneur, and lawyer for over 12 years. Eric was VP Business Development and General Counsel at local startup from 2007-2009, where he helped Audiolife successfully pivot and raise $5M from local angel investors. In 2009, Eric founded, the world’s premiere online talent development platform (think LinkedIn meets American Idol), which has partnered with top Hollywood professionals and companies, and recently received an investment from Originate. Lane Halley

Lane is a product designer at Carbon Five, which provides lean design & agile development for Web & mobile products. She's worked as a UX coach and trainer for startups (LUXr), an in-house design manager (Liquidnet), product designer at an agency (Cooper, Hot Studio) a director of User Experience (SenSage) and a video game producer (Mindscape/Electronic Arts). She's a popular teacher and speaker on the topics of UX, agile and Lean Startup. Lane loves startup energy and is frequently spotted at hackathons, Leancamp, Lean Startup Machine and Startup Weekend.

David Waxman

David is an Internet entrepreneur and advisor with nearly 20 years of experience. He has co-founded several companies, including Firefly Network (acquired by Microsoft), PeoplePC (acquired by Earthlink), and Spot Runner. His focus has always been the sharing of technology with the widest possible audience, using it to level the playing field, and creating active communities. David graduated from Berkeley and MIT, and lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children.

Brad Gilreath

Veteran of half a dozen startup weekends, Brad has contributed to winning teams as a business consultant with a strong technical background including scalable geolocation, e-commerce, front-end, and back-end development. Brad graduated from Georgia Tech and lives in the Los Angeles Area.

Josh MacAdam


Josh joined Liftopia in 2012 to support its rapidly expanding technical infrastructure and product offerings. Prior to Liftopia, Josh co-founded and led technology at social CRM Mingly, and bootstrapped AuctionWagon, a national chain of eBay drop-off stores. Josh also served as Chief Technology Officer at QIXO, a travel meta-search engine based in San Francisco. He also held a position on the Office XP team at Microsoft, has consulted for companies such as IBM and Disney, and holds a BS in Applied Math from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Josh grew up in Los Angeles and learned to ski at Mammoth.
